    Silhouette-Shadow

These pieces are the core of my work. They are pieces I create about what it feels like for me to walk quietly through the city more than about just what Somerville looks like.

These are paintings developed on top of compositions I create by cutting away to silhouette before painting the surface with contrasting imagery. I work with sights of Somerville so familiar they’re rarely even seen anymore. They are float-mount framed, setting the piece a distance from the wall such that the display lighting creates shadows in the white-spaces.

    Cityscapes and Landscapes

Paintings and drawings made in cities and countrysides. I've lived all of my life in cities and find them to be a rich source for personal inspiration. When traveling I bring a portable easel for plein air painting.

    Black Paper

These paintings are all created with acrylic paint on black-tar roofing paper. The paper provides an excellent tooth for working, and is ready to pin up and work on with no further preparation necessary.

    Drawings and Watercolors

Drawing in charcoal, pencil, pen, or with my cotman watercolor kit—really any drawing tool—is a pure pleasure to me. While frequently the drawings are made as references and resources for paintings and other works, they are also completed pieces in their own right.

    Printmaking

I began experimenting in printmaking as a way to study color and forms for use in my paintings. I was immediately taken in by the techniques, processes, and by the ways that serigraphs and monographs are like and unlike paintings.

    Murals

Building on a background in architecture and scenic painting, I began painting murals in the interiors of homes, businesses, and museums in 1999. Here are a few examples of that work. While no longer the mainstay of my work, I do still take on the occasional commissioned project.
